We are looking for engineers with hands on control automation experience. In this role you will work with the Principals and the Senior Engineers to drive the standardization of designs across the global region in production data centers and resolve open technical issues in the controls space. As part of the team, you will work with highly motivated experts and innovators in the data center industry. You will drive multiple projects, including controls deployments and retrofitting legacy equipment's. Utilizing Amazon Leadership principles, you will develop new processes or standards and test new innovations in the controls space. You will participate in the research and development of new technologies and designs applicable to our products or services. You will be also responsible for writing technical documentation for such projects. You must be capable of defining critical equipment specifications and approving equipment submittals. You will be relied on as a subject matter expert in the controls engineering field. At Amazon we highly support continued learning opportunities and focus on continued employee development.

As an engineer at Amazon you will be working with other internal groups as well as external groups including manufacturers, vendors, and contractors.

Amazon has a global presence. Travel will be necessary but shouldn’t be more than 25%. International support will be part of the job and some international travel will be necessary. Support could consist of working on international teams and require developing schematic and/or design document packages so an understanding of international electrical design requirements is preferable.

Key job responsibilities

The Sr Controls Engineer's key job responsibilities will be leading technical electrical controls and SCADA in both the existing and new generational designs. They support deep dives of large scale events in the existing fleet for root cause analysis to find lessons learned and shape future designs. They develop and approve changes to the Controls Basis of Design documentation. They are a subject matter expert for electrical and controls in the datacenter security and monitoring devices space.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Engineering Technology, or other related engineering degree.

  • 5-10 years of experience in Electrical/Control systems, controls design, development, implementation in an industrial, logistics, production, or manufacturing environment.

  • 5-10 years of experience directly managing and responsible for multiple large projects.

  • 3-5 years of experience directly related to data center or critical equipment design.

  • 3-5 years of demonstrated experience on technical documentation development (Product Design Requirements and Specifications, Electrical Schematics and SW/FW Diagrams).

  • 3-5 years of experience with PLCs and IoT devices programming.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS in Engineering (Electrical, Controls/Automation or Computer)

  • Experience designing, configuring, programming, installing, troubleshooting or servicing Controls or Electrical SCADA systems application specific controllers, software and networks.

  • Experiencing using common industrial communication protocols (MQTT, BACnet, MODBUS and/or Ethernet).

  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholder deliverables, requirements, and navigate difficult situations.

  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (PE), or certified Project Management Professional (PMP).

  • Firmware development in Python and C/C++. Java and SQL are a plus

  • Experience with AWS compute, storage, and database products.

  • Testing automated systems for efficiency, safety, and reliability.

  • Develop firmware algorithms to handle exceptional conditions and errors.

  • Assist in optimizing firmware to achieve performance standards.

  • Proven track record for cultivating strong relationships with internal stakeholders, vendors, or customers.

  • Excellent communication skills, teamwork, organizational and problem-solving skills.

  • In depth understanding of critical data center electrical equipment.

  • Be a motivated leader and a highly dependable individual.

  • Ability to carry new design concepts through exploration, development, deployment and sustaining.

  • An ability and willingness to think outside of the box to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs with no impact on quality, reliability, or maintainability.
