What You Will Do :

​​We are currently searching for a Laboratory Technician. This role will independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). This is a full-time opportunity located in Bethesda, MD. ​

  • Plan and conduct in vivo mouse phenotyping testing.

  • Record and prepare experimental data for investigators.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in hands on technical procedures including vascular cannulation, placement of tail vein catheters, intubation, blood collection, anesthesia, etc. required to conduct cardiovascular, metabolic, pulmonary, and other physiological testing in mice.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in animal observations and handling required to conduct neuromuscular, activity, exercise, and behavioral testing in mice.

  • Assist investigators with rodent transfers and animal protocol submissions.

  • Be responsible for lab inventory, purchasing, and budget and oversees the maintenance and servicing of all laboratory equipment.

  • Organize lab and animal rooms to include tasks such as stocking, cleaning, following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), prepare for Animal Care & Use Committee (ACUC)/AAALAC* inspections, lab safety, and act as primary lab facility contact.

  • Maintain lab’s compliance with animal facility, animal program, NIH and federal lab animal regulations and policies. Also serves as the lab’s representative for various NIH, Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), and AAALAC* inspections and reviews.

  • Perform lab orientations and user training.

What You Will Need :

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • At least three (3) years of experience conducting in vivo mouse research and testing.

  • A background demonstrating significant experience and proficiency in performing highly technical veterinary and/or research procedures in mice.

  • Experience and proficiency in mouse handling, and skill in performing behavioral and veterinary observations in mice.

  • Strong knowledge of laboratory facility policies and regulations.

  • Strong computer and software skills, and ability to set up and operate diverse scientific equipment.

  • Ability to work well independently and with others in a busy environment.

  • Team-oriented

What Would Be Nice To Have :

  • Preferred areas of study include Genetics, Biology, Life Sciences, or a related discipline.

  • Familiarity with animal program regulations including ACUC, AAALAC and/or OLAW is beneficial.
