POSITION SUMMARY

In alignment with company vision, mission, values, and objectives, this position leads and directs the overall quality program in an active “hands on” manner to ensure that the products produced at the Buchanan plant are in compliance with CertainTeed’s internal specifications, ASTM standards and U.L. standards to consistently meet or exceed our customer expectations.

The position will report directly to the CI Manager or designee for all work related to the facility. The position will also work closely with the salaried Quality Technician(s) and plant production personnel to resolve quality issues, conduct quality related projects including raw materials and perform testing as directed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Directly supervises the salaried non-exempt Lab Technician.

  • Develops, trains and maintains a knowledgeable staff that allows the Plant to consistently meet all Company Quality Assurance policies.

  • Coaches plant employees engaged in sampling, inspection, diagnostic, and testing activities on assigned shift.

  • Ensures all employees are following plant quality procedures.

  • Conducts Quality & Process Step 0 assessments to improve & maintain system health. Acts independently to close gaps.

  • Plans, establishes, and audits raw material, in-process, & product quality assurance procedures

  • Dispositions finished goods and raw material according to the published plant specifications during assigned shifts.

  • Initiates line stoppages, when warranted, for significant product, process or safety concerns.

  • Analyzes statistical data and product specifications to ensure compliance to product standards and flag problematic trends for improvement actions. Uses appropriate problem-solving tools to determine root cause & implement sustainable countermeasures.

  • Formulates & conducts training activities for hourly and salaried employees as related to product quality, plant quality systems & procedures, and process maintenance & control.

  • Maintains a neat, adequately stocked, safe, organized laboratory facility, keeping equipment in clean, calibrated, working condition, and reporting issues promptly for repair. Responsible for ensuring the quality areas are clean and organized through the implementation of 5S.

  • Provides lab tests and documents findings to assist in the resolution of customer complaints and assists the Engineering team in analyzing complaint data for recommended improvements and changes in production methods.

  • Oversees the effective functioning of the plant quality database, and ensures the inputs are entered accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Manages 3rd party testing requirements for raw material & product tests not performed in-house.

  • Participate in Incident & Near Miss Investigations to determine root cause and corrective actions.

  • May be required to perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor of Chemical Engineering is preferred. High school diploma or GED with equivalent field experience will also be considered.

  • At least 3-5 years of gypsum process experience

  • At least 3 years of leading people is an asset.

  • At least 3-5 years of quality control experience in a manufacturing environment

  • Core competencies include a passion for detail, effective verbal and written communication skills, teaming skills, listening skills, ability to organize and retrieve information, and to handle people tactfully and effectively in situations involving various educational and employment levels.

  • Requires proficient typing skills and to be comfortable with Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook/e-mail. Must be able to learn and effectively use local plant business quality systems.

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Highly motivated with ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving organizational and personal goals.

  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment (co-workers, contractors, etc.)

  • Customer management skills are an asset

  • Basic knowledge of Statistical Process Control is an asset

  • Well organized and systematic.

  • Must be flexible to adapt to changing and varying work requirements.
