The Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center (MSTIC) tracks nation state and criminal actors to protect Microsoft and Microsoft's customers. The actors we track are often highly technical and maintain good operational security. Tracking actors like this requires persistence and ingenuity and is done by combining the work of intelligence analysts, reverse engineers, developers and data scientists.

MSTIC provides unique insight on threats and is responsible for delivering timely and actionable threat intelligence across our products and services. Within MSTIC, Signals Engineering’s mission is to enhance research, detection and protection against threats to Microsoft & customers by codifying MSTIC’s analytical expertise at-scale, generating signals to extend our global threat coverage and advanced collaboration with Microsoft product, research and defender teams.

We are looking for an innovative Principal Software Engineer who understands the threat landscape and can translate security insights from our analysts into real-world code processing a range of threat intelligence-related signals. We are a fast-paced team with talented engineers.

In this role, you will gather requirements, lead the design and implementation of systems and services responsible for secure and efficient data sharing at scale. You will work closely with analysts and other security researchers to deliver intelligence-focused solutions providing additional data, artefacts, and analysis to enable our adversary pursuit mission.

Responsibilities

  • Accelerate our analysts’ insights by building innovative analysis tooling running at cloud scale.

  • Architect and develop “best-in-class” engineering for our services by ensuring that the services and the components are well-defined and modularized, secure, reliable, diagnosable, actively monitored and reusable.

  • Provide technical leadership across features, projects, service fundamentals, and tools

  • Proactively seek new knowledge and adapt to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of our services while also sharing knowledge with other engineers

  • Partner across multiple product groups to apply subject-matter expertise in secure systems design practices, interactions between cloud technology layers and components, dependencies at scale, and the code that defines infrastructures.

  • Work across multiple teams in Microsoft, create clarity, decompose complex problems in smaller manageable workstreams, and harness the energy of the team to solve them.

  • Be a subject matter expert and work towards developing a deeper understanding of the business problems solved by our team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field.

  • Advanced technical experience with skills in a mix of C/C++, C# and scripting languages: (Python/PowerShell/JavaScript) OR equivalent experience.

  • Deep knowledge of cloud development using Azure, AWS, or GCP.

  • Experienced with Kubernetes, Linux, or containers.

  • Proficient with data structures, algorithms, and software design principles.

  • Experience with DevOps tools and practices, such as Git, CI/CD, testing, and monitoring.

  • Proven experience solving and decomposing complex problems, driving technical designs, implementing, validating, and delivering features to production.

  • Curiosity and passion for problem solving; ability to learn new skills quickly and apply them to real world problems

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of post-breach compromise domain – including methods for reconnaissance, persistence, lateral movement and data exfiltration across both on-premises and cloud environments.

  • Big data, data pipelines and visualisation Azure DevOps or similar cloud-based development experience

  • Awareness of, and ability to reason about, modern distributed software design patterns and cloud systems architecture, including microservices, containers, load-balancing, queuing, caching.
