Job Summary

Supports administrative and clinical operations for human subjects research studies.

Responsibilities

Provides research support role for clinical and community-based research visits.

  • Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to departmental procedures.

  • Obtains and records patient temperatures, pulse rates, blood pressure, weight and height measurements, review of medications, allergies, and past medical history, and places patient on pulse oximetry and cardiac monitors as per department protocols, or as directed.

  • Reports and records all observed or verbalized patient concerns and changes in condition to a member of the nursing or physician staff.

  • Performs specialty skills and delegated procedures under the direct supervision of a licensed staff member.

  • Accompanies providers examine patients in examination rooms as needed and/or assist physicians/licensed staff with procedures.

  • Performs delegated procedures and clerical tasks under the direct supervision of a licensed staff member.

  • Accompanies providers examine patients in examination rooms as needed and/or assist physicians/licensed staff with procedures.

  • Attends and completes mandatory department in-services and training.

  • May perform phlebotomy and specimen processing following department procedures, and physician orders, after specialized training.

  • May clean and stock areas as needed.

  • May work with manager/designee to reconcile unit charges.

  • May assist in orienting new employees regarding the clerical functions of the unit.

  • May schedule research participant appointments.

  • May admit, discharge, and transfer per unit standard.

Problem-Solving

Follows established procedures to complete work. Community-based work may be performed with a second clinical team member; University-based work is performed independently. Work is frequently reviewed for accuracy and to ensure adherence to research protocols. Sensitive or unusual situations are referred to the supervisor.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Office environment, outpatient clinic environment, University inpatient setting, off-site and mobile locations. Some tasks may require the use of PPE .

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, and talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, driving, bending, lifting supplies – up to 25-30 lbs. Biohazard precautions.

Seldom: Reaching overhead.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to support clinical faculty or staff and provide appropriate care to assigned research participants. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the plan of care and must provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Current EMT Certification in the State of Utah or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
