Summary:

Provide effective planning and leadership to ensure the safe, efficient, and productive use of all Fleet Operations personnel and equipment in support of the US Antarctic Program. Proactively coordinate with all ASC departments as needed to facilitate and complete all sustaining and project needs of the United States Antarctic Program. Physically support teams as needed with equipment operation and on-site guidance.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Interface with the National Science Foundation, other contractors, and ASC personnel as needed to coordinate efficient and effective use of all Fleet Operations personnel and equipment.

  • Plans, establishes goals, prioritizes and schedules work center tasks and work assignments. Receives requests and schedules personnel and assets to meet planned requirements.

  • Reviews plans and procedures annually and submits amendments for approval. Ensures all personnel are trained to safely perform their assigned tasks.

  • Ensures operators inspect equipment and lifting fixtures in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and established procedures.

  • Ensures operators perform daily maintenance in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and established procedures.

  • Coordinates with the Vehicle Maintenance facility and Operations Manager to plan equipment maintenance and repair support for heavy equipment.

  • Generates input for the Equipment Replacement Plan regarding equipment demands and vehicle applicability.

  • Maintains accurate inventory and assures adequate materials are on hand for planned work.

  • Develops personnel with succession and long-term knowledge in mind.

  • Tracks data as requested by Operations Manager.

  • Provides direct support, using staff resources, to achieve all ASC metrics.

  • Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Provides documentation to these divisions, as necessary, to ensure adequate and compliant documentation.

  • Ensures that all subordinate employees are trained and understand ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and quality assurance requirements and goals. Maintains documentation, as necessary, to meet these requirements.

  • Reports and documents incidents in a timely manner.

  • Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with subordinates, station management, and stakeholders. This includes staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, project planning, quality standard procedures, and safety practices.

  • Physical activities to involve lifting up to the safety regulation maximum, working both indoors and outdoors.

  • Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required. An additional four years of experience will be accepted in lieu of a degree.

  • Minimum five years of supervisory and leadership experience

  • Experience in leading and managing heavy equipment operations or large-scale construction projects is required.

Expected Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to create, read, understand, and provide feedback on project schedules and blueprints is required.

  • Ability to provide labor and equipment projections for daily, weekly, seasonal planning is required.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required. (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead a multi-skilled work force in a regularly changing environment to complete a wide variety of tasks is required.

  • Must have excellent verbal and written skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience in project planning and scheduling.

  • Experience managing teams and equipment in austere environments.

  • Ability to thrive managing in a resource and equipment limited environment.

  • Ability to project capital budget requirements and provide relevant data in support of capital requests. Ability to make informed mechanical decisions about the usability of equipment.

  • Ability to create and implement relevant safety training programs.

  • Ability to create and implement relevant equipment training programs.

  • Ability to establish and maintain labor and expense budgets.

  • Prior project management experience.

  • Prior cold-climate equipment operations experience.

  • Class A CDL.

  • Prior experience in building or maintaining roads, highways, or airfields.

  • Snow grooming, moving experience.

  • A clear understanding of grade and drainage.

  • Rigging certifications, knowledge or experience.

  • Ability to work in an environment with regular Re-Directs and Change Orders in a calm, collected and respectful manner. With McMurdo Station under a complete rebuild new tasking, weather and priorities are the norm rather than the exception.

Physical and/or Other Requirements :

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods

  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica

  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer

  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.

  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
