Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for assisting Assistant City Attorneys or City Attorney in their course of work by conducting legal research, investigating, and gathering evidence. Prepares ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and other legal documents. Exercises no supervision.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists attorneys in their review and preparation of ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and other legal documents.

  • Files court briefs and pleadings with the County, District, and Federal court clerks.

  • Researches points of law using case books, statutes, and other legal materials.

  • Organizes and categorizes legal opinions, City contracts, and standard ordinances.

  • Prepares medical summaries for cases and prepares draft of legal documents.

  • Maintains computer database on legal research and other information.

  • Maintains a calendar of scheduled events which include hearings, meetings, and court dates.

  • Files plaintiff and defendant pleadings, discovery documents, and correspondence in case folders.

  • Gathers supplemental case information such as personnel, payroll, and employment records.

  • Operates office equipment to conduct research and prepare documents.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Paralegal Studies from an accredited college or university; or Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university and certificate of completion in a formal course of paralegal study at an accredited educational institute required.

  • One (1) year of experience in paralegal work.

  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of State and Federal electronic filing systems.

  • Knowledge of Civil Rules and procedures of County, District and Federal Court Systems.

  • Experience using personal computer, copier, scanner, fax, case management software and other modern business hardware. .

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

  • Knowledge of legal principles, procedures, and practices.

  • Knowledge of Civil Rules and procedures of County, District, and Federal Court Systems.

  • Knowledge of modern office procedures and practices.

  • Skill in operating office equipment and utilizing rudimentary software.

  • Ability to conduct legal research.

  • Ability to prepare drafts of legal documents.

  • Ability to gather evidence and other legal information.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

  • Ability to develop clear and concise written reports.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.

  • Ability to examine and verify legal documents.

  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position with or without accommodations.

  • Working conditions are in an office environment.
